Course Grants are awarded to faculty at GWEC member colleges and universities to help improve existing courses or create new courses in communications systems and wireless systems. Course grants support pedagogy development and renewal.

Course grants range in size from $1,000 to $1,500; the grant period is one year. Annual application deadlines are in January 18, 2010 and June 7, 2010. The Principal Investigator will be notified of the proposal status within approximately 45 days of the submission deadline. WHO MAY APPLY: Faculty from GWEC member institutions. WHAT WILL BE FUNDED: We award grants to institutions under the supervision of the principal investigator, who allocates funds as needed. Equipment and other resources purchased with grant funds become the property of the institution. See the following for Eligible and Ineligible expenses:

Eligible expenses
  • Equipment
  • Software
  • Supplies 
  • Travel 
  • Technical services 
  • Speaker honoraria (up to $200)
  • Faculty stipend (up to $500 total per grant--may be divided up among more than one faculty member)

Ineligible expenses
  • Overhead
  • Faculty salaries 
  • Speaker honoraria over $200 
  • Faculty stipends over $500 per grant (A $500 stipend may be divided up among several faculty members) 
  • Wages for students 
  • Publicity expenses 
  • Legal and other expenses of business formation or operation

HOW TO APPLY: All proposals must be emailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Your proposal may not exceed five pages in length. Prepare the narrative in Microsoft Word, using 12-point Times font.

The proposal should include:

  • Project Title
  • Name of the institution you represent
  • Names and contact information of team members (include academic rank and department affiliation of each team member), including Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Names and contact information of administrative contact (AC). GWEC defines the administrative contact as a grants administrator or fiscal officer authorized to commit the institution to the terms of the grant. Often, the AC works in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs or the Office of Contracts and Grants. The PI and the AC cannot be the same person.
  • The following people must verify their support for your proposal: Administrative Contact (grants administrator or fiscal officer authorized to commit the institution to the terms of the grant), Dean of Faculty, Department Chair, and the Principal Investigator (this is waived if the PI is also the applicant).
  • To ensure timely approval of your proposal, please have approval letters (or form) signed by your Administrative Contact, Dean of Faculty, Department Chair, and the Principal Investigator (this is waived if the PI is also the applicant) submitted with the proposal. These letters will not count against the five pages in length maximum.
  • An abstract (250 words or less) with the top three objectives (in bullet format) of the program
  • Proposal narrative format with page length guidelines: maximum length may not exceed five pages
  • Introduction: What problem(s) or needs are you addressing?
  • History and context: What have you done so far? What existing programs will you build on or start?
  • Work plan and outcomes: What do you hope to achieve? What changes will the grant bring about? How do you know the program will succeed?
  • Budget with budget justification.
  • Letters of support and approval (letters will not count against the five pages in length maximum).
